OVERVIEW

With the housing deficit in Lagos hitting record high in recent years and many Lagosians living in slums, there is an increasing need to provide solutions to the housing problem. Sensale Research headquartered in Lagos and Rhema Project, a design and construction company both inclined to solve this dire problem has hosted this design competition themed: “House-up Lagos”. The design competition Is deliberately made open to give way for creatives, designers, architects, engineers etc who have the innovative idea for social housing in Lagos, Nigeria.

CHALLENGE

The challenge is simple. Design a self-contained room apartment housing at 500,000 naira per unit. Target users are students and fresh graduates.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Registration can be as an individual or a group maximum of 5.
  • Each participant registered must not be more than 30 years of age as at the time of submission (will be verified)
  • Only Nigerian citizens resident in Nigeria are eligible.
  • Shortlisted participants will be invited for a live presentation
  • Both undergraduates and graduates are encouraged to apply
  • A team can be a mix of professionals across fields
  • Top entries must be available for a live presentation

DESIGN

  • The apartment design must not be more than 4 floors high (3 Storeys)
  • Each unit is to be “self-contained” i.e A room, toilet and kitchen
  • Size of spaces should comply with the Lagos state building code
  • Integration and participation should be encouraged among residents through design layout
  • Landscaping should be considered important in the overall look of the community
  • At least the basic living conditions should be met
  • The changing climatic conditions of the state should be analysed for a well-informed design
  • Building analysis should be carried out to highlight the different facets of the design
  • Sections, details, schedules etc. that helps understand the design should be included
  • Mechanical, electrical and other building services must be captured in design documents

CONSTRUCTION

  • The construction cost per unit room must not exceed 500,000 naira.
  • Structural stability, Aesthetics and land constraints should be put into consideration
  • The three foundation typologies commonly found in Lagos should be designed for
  • Some of the lands available for development are slums and swamps
  • Entry document should contain the most suitable construction technique for the proposed design.
  • Locally available materials are highly encouraged.
  • Maintenance and construction of proposed design must be cheap and considerably affordable
  • The cost of construction breakdown sheet must be included.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Registration

Registration starts Saturday, May 1st, 2021.

Sheets and Deadline

A maximum number of 20 A3-sized sheets should be uploaded latest Wednesday, August 31st, 2021 by
11:59pm.

03.

All supporting sheets must be attached, this includes structural details, foundation details, roof details etc.

04.
File Formats

Any additional file and/or media should be in pdf, jpeg or mp4 and the detailed link uploaded in the 20-paged document.

05.
First Page Details

The first page should contain the full details of participating member or members
